This is delightful! I came to a similar biphasic understanding of mental fluidity when I was heavily experimenting with THC a while back, so it's nice to see someone else describe it more fully.

I remember when I first noticed this in myself, the image that came to mind was crystal formation/melting; same sort of thing as mud drying/melting, but captures a useful idea: when your mind is more molten, you can't just shape it and expect it to dry any which way. You kind of have to observe the belief-crystallization processes that naturally take place and then break up any malignant crystals that start to form ("malignant" according to your internal gut-level alarm system, meta-rationality, whatever; imagine you notice yourself slipping into AI psychosis, for instance, and your gut is screaming "NO NO YOU'RE NOT SMARTER THAN THE DOZEN OTHER CASES YOU'VE READ ABOUT") before they can solidify.

Great concept! Also reminds me a bit of Kevin Simler's take on "prickles and goo", though he's talking about it more as personality traits than something that varies over time: https://archive.is/JbHXu
